Paramount Gives Blu-Ray Rebate Incentive

Paramount is joining the Blu-ray front full force, offering consumers a financial incentive for making the switch to the format. The studio will give consumers a $10 rebate for certain library titles, including ‘The Godfather,’ and ‘Transformers,’ through the holiday season.

The promotion starts September 2nd, and other studios are likely to follow suit. Ever since winning the battle against HD-DVD in January, the number of adopters has slowed. Analysts were predicting at least $1 Billion in sales for the player, but sales have barely passed $300 million.

‘The Godfather’ has seen a restoration for Blu-Ray, and will carry a price tag of $120 dollars. Yeah, I think my DVD copy serves me just fine until that price drops.

Bond Comes to Blu-Ray

Bond Comes to Blu-Ray

High Def Digest is reporting that MGM/UA is prepping six James Bond films for Blu-Ray DVD this fall, in anticipation of the latest movie, ‘Quantum of Solace.’

The films set for the high-def upgrade are, ‘Dr. No,’ ‘From Russia With Love,’ ‘Thunderball,’ ‘Live and Let Die,’ ‘For Your Eyes Only,’ and ‘Die Another Day.’

Wait, ‘Die Another Day?’ Really? That’s the best you can do? ‘Die Another Day?’ The one with an invisible car? Aaaaagggghhh… I mean, hell, why not rush out ‘Moonraker?’ Sweet Jesus, why? At least it’s a start.

For me, the James Bond series is cinematic comfort food. I know every line and every scene, but love them dearly. The Bond enthusiasm is running especially high at the moment, as it’s the 100th birthday celebration for Ian Flemming, creator of Bond. There’s the new book and the upcoming movie. And Daniel Craig has probably been the best Bond since, dare I say it? George Lazenby.

No matter what the movies are, I know I’ll buy them. Yeah, I’m a sucker. -Sam

Godfather? Blu-Ray?

DVD news site The Digital Bits had a link up this morning to a site called Blocks & Files.  The article is all about storage and media and is kinda boring.  However, there’s one interesting paragraph.  Here’s an exerpt:

The beautifully restored Godfather trilogy will be re-released in September, prompting, no doubt, hundreds of thousands of DVD sales and, hopefully, Blu-ray disk sales as well. Only with Blu-ray will the full richness of tone and detail in Coppola’s masterpiece transfer to home screens. Perhaps this will be the Blu-ray offer that home movie screen viewers cannot refuse.

Really?  September?  I cannot wait.  Read the whole article here.

Paramount to Finally Release Blu-Ray Titles

Paramount the only hold out formerly of the HD-DVD camp will be releasing its first Blu-Ray title next month.

The first to be released are Bee Movie. Face/Off, and Next. Apparently, Blu-Ray owners really want Nicholas Cage movies before more important Paramount titles like Indiana Jones, or Taxi Driver.

The last HD-DVD titles released by Paramount came out March 4th, and were in the bargain 40% bin immediately.

As a former HD-DVD supporter, these blu-ray stories come at me like a reminder of a loss of a loved one. It’s like, yep, thanks, ok….*sob*

Netflix To Raise Fee For Blu-Ray Renters

Citing higher purchasing costs, Netflix has announced that it will raise fees for those who rent Blu-Ray DVDs through the popular on-line rental website.

In a first quarter earnings conference call yesterday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said, ‘because of the higher cost of Blu-ray and the consumer expectations around high-def content, we are planning on implementing a modest monthly premium for access to Blu-ray some time this year.’

No word on how much the premium will be.
