Official: Aronofsky to direct Robocop reboot
July 30, 2008
Darren Aronofsky has been confirmed as the director for the new ‘Robocop’ film, which producers are calling a reboot, similar to Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins.’
Also, like the news with the new Terminator film, the film will be an R, unless of course, Aronofsky decides things should be cut back, but I highly doubt that. It wouldn’t be Robocop if it were rated PG-13.
When asked if Peter Weller will reprise his role, co=producer Mike Medavoy said, it was “the director’s choice.”
I’m not sure if Peter Weller will be up to it given his current career as a college professor, but he did have a pretty kick-ass role of a villain on ‘24.’ For some reason, I’m not that much of a purist when it comes to Robocop, I’m very curious at how this one turns out.
WB Developing Marvin the Martian Film
July 30, 2008
Everyone knows Marvin the Martian, the little weird alien cartoon, you know, the guy in the green spartan-esque helmet? Warner Bros. is aiming to give the little guy a big screen send up, and is starting to develop a live-action/CGI film.
Marvin the Martian was created by Chuck Jones, and first appeared in 1948. Marvin was always looking to blow up earth, but always being foiled by wise-cracking Bugs Bunny.
The pitch was developed by Steve Crystal at Alcon Entertainment, who has a first-look deal at the studio. The story pitched was a Christmas story, Marvin coming to earth to destroy Christmas, but being stopped by getting trapped in a gift box.
Alcon is out looking to bring a writer and director on board, there is currently no scheduled release date. I don’t think I’m necessarily the right demo for it, but I’d be more open to making a film with Marvin the Martian then the Smurfs, but what do I know.
Inglorious Bastards Update
July 30, 2008
The talk of the town (or internets?) has been Quentin Tarantino’s new WWII film, ‘Inglorious Bastards,’ and everyone wants to be a part of it, including Universal.
Universal is in negotiations with the Weinstein Co. to help bring the movie to theaters. Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein met with five different studios last week about co-financing, and apparently its between Paramount.
It was reported that Brad Pitt recently met with Tarantino to play the character of Aldo Raine, though, no deal has been made yet.
Shooting is on schedule to begin in the Fall in Germany and France.
Jack White & Alicia Keys to Do Bond Theme Song
July 29, 2008
And you thought they were just being coy about Amy Winehouse doing the title song. Reuters is reporting that Jack White and Alicia Keys will team up to perform the theme song to the new James Bond movie, ‘Quantum of Solace.’
The song, written by White, is titled, ‘Another Way to Die.’ It is also the first Bond theme to be a duet.
I’m curious. I’m a huge fan of Mr. White, with both the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, and I don’t mind terribly the few Alicia Keys songs that I’ve heard. But, Bond? Really? If the report wasn’t coming from Reuters, I don’t know if I’d believe it.
Well, it could be worse. They could have gotten Madonna to do it again.
Johnny Depp to Play Mad Hatter
July 29, 2008
MSN News in Latin America is reporting that Johnny Depp has been signed to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland.’
The movie will be shot in 3D. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has alreay been signed to play Alice.
For me, I’ll sit through anything Johnny Depp does. After his performances in ‘Ed Wood,’ ‘Fear and Loathing,’ and even the first ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie. Depp has me. I even liked ‘Once Upon a time in Mexico,’ in large part because of Depp’s performance.
Say what you will about Depp, this’ll be an interesting one… -Sam
DVD Review: Shine a Light
July 29, 2008
I’ve never seen the ‘Stones in Concert, not sure if I’ll ever get to, but I seriously walked away from this film feeling like I’d legitimately gone to a very rare, very small, personal show with the Rolling Stones. Read more
Indy 5? Really?
July 29, 2008
A new interview with George Lucas explains the tension behind-the-scenes of the recent ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ Lucas said that the tension came from the fact that on the new movies, he needed to agree with Steven Speilberg and Harrison Ford while on earlier films, everyone looked to him.
He also dropped this little bomb: ‘really, with the last one, Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have issues about the direction we’d like to take. I’m in the future: Steve’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that.’
I don’t know if this is true or if this is simply Lucas trying to re-write history yet again. (Remember, the rumor going around for years was that the big hold-up was finding a script that Lucas liked?) Either way, Indy 4 has really dampened my enthusiasm for Indy 5.
Sam Raimi Planning Fourth Evil Dead Film
July 28, 2008
ComicCon saw Sam Raimi reveal that a fourth Evil Dead is on its way. While speaking about his new horror film, ‘Drag Me to Hell,’ the director told the audience he’d love to do a new ‘Evil Dead’ film with lead Bruce Campbell.
“I love working with Bruce Campbell, he’s like Allison [Lohman, lead in ‘Drag Me To Hell]. He’s super willing to do anything to make it right….I would love to work with Bruce again because I’d love to test those limits. I’d love to make another Evil Dead picture. And actually that’s in the wheelhouse. I’d like to work on it with my brother Ivan when he comes up next week.”
So there you have it, the intent is there, lets see if Raimi follows through. The last Evil Dead film, Army of Darkness, came out in 1992.
